Pope Francis is set to make a historic visit to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, from September 3 to 6, 2024. This visit to the world’s largest Muslim, majority nation holds profound significance for Indonesians of all faiths.
During his visit, Pope Francis will engage in an interreligious meeting at the iconic Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. This event will symbolize a new chapter in promoting dialogue and harmony between diverse faith communities.
The motto of the Visit is “Faith – Fraternity – Compassion’.
In the logo, the Pope is shown in the visit's emblem standing in front of a golden "Garuda," a sacred eagle drawn in a style evocative of traditional Indonesian "batik" fabric, with his hand raised in blessing.
With 281 .5 million people, Indonesia has the world's fourth-largest population and the largest Muslim population. About 87.4% are Muslim, 7.5% are Protestant, 3.1 % are Catholic and 1 .7% are Hindu.
For many Indonesians of all faiths, the Pope's visit brings a strong sense of hope. It is viewed as an important step toward building more tolerance, encouraging unity, and promoting peace between Christians and Muslims, both in Indonesia and around the world.
After Paul VI in 1 970 and John Paul II in 1 989, Francis is the third pope to visit Indonesia, an archipelago made up of numerous ethnic and socioeconomic groupings, languages, cultures, and religious beliefs.
