On the fourth & last day of the Holy Father in Myanmar, Pope Francis celebrated a mass dedicated for the youth in Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Yangon this morning.
The mass was attended by hundreds of thousands of youth and pilgrims from diverse religions from different areas of the world. Hours before the Mass, it was observed that Saint Mary’s Cathedral was already full as well as those who are united with them outside the church.
Many were hopeful that they will have a glance of the Pontiff and be blessed like him. On the other hand, numerous individuals were excited to meet and see the Holy Father, hoping that Pope Francis will bless their country with love and peace.
Everyone got thrilled when Pope Fancis came in the hallway of Saint Mary’s Cathedral with Cardinal Charles Bo. The Holy Father waved his hands and gave his signature smile to everyone on his way to the church. Everybody waved their hands while yelling for the Pontiff’s name as a sign of their heartful welcome.
As the Eucharistic Celebration was offered for the passionate youth of Myanmar while everyone solemnly prayed with the Holy Father.
In the homily of the Holy See, he joined the people of Myanmar as they thanked God for his visit in their beautiful country. Pope Francis said that looking at the young people of the Golden Land, he shared with them a phrase from today’s reading that resonated within the Holy Father, “the footsteps of those who bring good news are a welcome sound.”
With these words, Pope Francis said to them that they are a welcome sound, that they are a beautiful and encouraging sight for they bring good news of their faith and enthusiasm. Indeed, the young people of Myanmar are the “good news” for they are the concrete sign of the church’s faith in Jesus Christ who bring us joy and hope that will never die.
The Holy Father added that the young men and women of Myanmar are not afraid to believe in the good news of God’s mercy, for it has a name and a face: Jesus Christ. Pope Francis believed that these young people were ready to bring hope to the wider world and to their suffering brothers and sisters who most need their prayers and enthusiasm for human rights and justice.
Before ending his homily, the Pontiff asked them to remember him in their prayers. The Holy Father encouraged each and everyone of them to look to Mary as they were in the beautiful cathedral dedicated to Our Lady’s Immaculate Conception. Pope Francis said that like them, the young men and women of Myanmar, Mother Mary was young when she said “yes” to the Lord. The Holy Father encourages the youth to be courageous enough to trust in the “good news”of the Lord.
After the Eucharistic celebration, the Holy See walked around the street of Saint Mary’s Cathedral and happily bids his goodbye to everyone. Countless pilgrims cried “We love you Papa” as Pope Francis passed by them. Afterwards, the Holy Father went to Yangon International Airport for his Official Farewell and to continue his Apostolic visit in Bangladesh with the theme “Harmony and Peace”, his Bangladesh trip will take place from 30th of November to 2nd of December.
